Homeric to swerve Plate

Homeric is set to bypass the John Smith's Northumberland Plate at Newcastle as connections are keen to give him more time to recover from his Royal Ascot exertions.

The four-year-old, who runs in the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing colours, was beaten just under seven lengths when seventh behind Well Sharp in the two-and-a-half-mile Ascot Stakes.

He was left in the five-day entries for Saturday's two-mile heat by trainer Ed Dunlop, but Highclere racing manager Harry Herbert reports him an unlikely runner.

He said: "He doesn't run. It just comes a bit quicker than ideal for him after Royal Ascot and the ground is fast up there. We'll just find another spot for him.

"We would have loved the Ascot race to have been run faster as they went a fairly slow pace and he got a bit stuck before running on and he wasn't beaten that far. He's had very little racing and there's more to come."

Homeric had been a general 14-1 shot for the Northumberland Plate, with Montaser now heading the betting after Tiger Cliff was ruled out on Tuesday.

David Lanigan has decided not to run Biographer because of concerns about the quick ground.

The four-year-old colt is now likely to go for the Listed Coral Marathon at Sandown on Saturday week.

"He won't run because of the ground. He might go to Sandown for the two-mile race on Saturday week," said the Lambourn trainer.
