Love Island coasts home

Trainer Richard Whitaker is considering a trip to Glorious Goodwood for Love Island after she bounced back to form in the EBF/Kyle Akam Cystic Fibrosis Trust Memorial Fillies' Handicap at Pontefract.

A winner on her seasonal reappearance at Doncaster and placed on two of her next three starts, the usually consistent four-year-old trailed home last of 12 on her latest appearance on Town Moor.

Sent off at 6/1 to atone for that rare no-show, Love Island disputed the early running under leading apprentice George Chaloner, before leaving nearest rival Rivas Rhapsody in her wake as she rounded the home turn.

She showed no signs of stopping in the straight, galloping all the way to the line to take the £15,000 contest by four lengths, with Rivas Rhapsody and Misplaced Fortune dead-heating for the runner-up spot.

Whitaker could now target Love Island at the Stewards' Cup, or the consolation race for the valuable sprint handicap run 24 hours earlier - the Stewards' Sprint Stakes.

Explaining his filly's disappointing display at Doncaster, the West Yorkshire handler said: "She was in season the last time she ran. We didn't actually realise it until she got home that night, but you have these blips with fillies from time to time.

"We gave her a week's holiday to get over it and it's great she's bounced back.

"We thought a stiff six furlongs at Pontefract would suit her well and she's a nice filly with plenty of ability.

"I had been looking at possibly running in the Stewards' Cup. I don't know whether she'll get into that or not, but if she doesn't, there's always the consolation race."

Cool Bahamian showed talent and determination in equal measure to claim what looked a competitive Spindrifter Conditions Stakes in the hands of John Fahy.

Just four runners went to post for the six-furlong contest, with York maiden winner Rufford a warm order as the 4/7 favourite.

However, he could only finish third as Eve Johnson Houghton's Cool Bahamian (9/2), a winner at Lingfield before finishing fifth in the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom, stuck to his task to beat Fair Ranger by a neck.

Johnson Houghton said: "I thought he ran well in the Woodcote. He just didn't really handle the track.

"It looked a decent race today. Richard Fahey's horse (Rufford) was heavily backed, but ours is a lovely, big horse and I'm delighted with him.

"They didn't really go fast enough for him and when he gets to the front he literally only just does enough. He's never going to win by far.

"I doubt he's going to get in a nursery and now he's won a Class Two it will be hard to find him another suitable conditions race where he doesn't have to give a lot of weight away, so we'll see where we go next

"We'll take things slowly with him as I think he'll make a lovely three-year-old."

Fair Ranger's jockey, Pat Dobbs, was given a two-day suspension (July 15 and 16) for using his whip above the permitted level.
